Detailed Jamaican Mango and Lime Locking Gel Review

Jamaican Mango and Lime Locking Gel is one of the most popular dreadlock products on the market. It’s affordable, available in most hair stores that carry “ethnic” items, and should last a long time.

Here at StrongLocs, we’re big fans of limiting the number of products and chemicals you put on your hair and scalp. We believe the fewer chemicals you put in your hair, the better of your scalp and hair will be long-term. And, Jamaican Mango and Lime has an average sized ingredient list compared to other products available. We’d like it more if it had less ingredients.

Jamaican Mango and Lime Locking Gel has a nice smell to it. This can be good or bad depending on your scalp sensitivity to fragrance and if you like the smell.

One issue with Jamaican Mango and Lime Locking Gel is that if you use too much on your dreadlocks, it can cause build up. This is a side effect of this product’s ingredients and ability to have a strong “hold”. Water based products that are more lightweight than Jamaican Mango and Lime won’t typically leave build up but they also won’t hold as tight. This can cause your retwist to unravel. So, you’ll have to decide what you’d prefer more.

However, to prevent this, just use less of the product and regularly wash your dreadlocks.

Pros

Smells good

Has a tight hold

Lightweight gel

Cons

Can cause build up if too much is used

Might not hold tight on thick hair if applied lightly

You may not like the smell

Jamaican Mango and Lime Locking Gel Directions

Step 1

Before using Jamaican Mango & Lime, you’re going to want to wash your dreadlocks. Washing your locs will help to prevent build-up by removing any pre-existing product and oil in your hair.

Step 2

After washing your hair, lightly dry it by patting it down with a towel (don’t rub the towel against your head). Your hair should still be wet to the touch.

Step 3

Use your finger to dip out a small amount of gel and apply to your roots or new growth and start re-twisting and/or styling your dreadlocks. If you’re starting dreadlocks instead of retwisting, apply the gel to all of your sectioned hair instead of just the root.

Step 4

Dry your hair. This can be done by sitting under a hair dryer, using a handheld blow dryer, or by letting your hair air dry. However, make sure your hair is dry before going to bed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will Jamaican Mango and Lime Locking Gel cause build-up?

All products will cause build up if not used correctly and Jamaican Mango and Lime Locking Gel is no different. You can help prevent this from happening by using less product and regularly washing your hair.

Does Jamaican Mango and Lime Locking Gel grow your hair?

Your hair growth is mainly determined by diet (vitamins), genetics, and certain medications (if you take any), not products. However, if you’re having slow hair growth due to your dreadlocks breaking off at the root (this is rare), Jamaican Mango and Lime Locking Gel can help prevent that by coating your individual strands.
